“The Shining Mountain”
Kilimanjaro rises 15,000 feet above the Tanzania plains. While no longer an active volcano, “fumaroles” (or openings to emit gas) is still present. Scientists continue to study the crater to assure the safety of climbers, however no activity has been experienced in over 150 years.
The snow-crested summit was first reached by a Marangu army scout who reached to top nine times before he realized there was a crater! Those wishing to rock or snow climb will find ample adventure. Typically climbers who travel on the Marangu route take 4 – 5 days to complete the entire climb. |
