*Victoria Falls- Everything to know

What Is the Devil’s Pool?

The Devil’s Pool is a natural pool created by thousands of years of erosion. What makes Devil’s pool unique is there is a rock ledge at the edge of the Victoria Falls, where the water is only a few centimeters deep allowing adventure seekers the opportunity to jump into the water without getting swept over the edge. While in the Devil’s Pool, you can lie on the rock rim and look out over the edge down the Victoria Falls providing the most dramatic and exhilarating views. Devil’s Pool is located right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. You can only access the pool through Zambia, but you can also cross to the Zimbabwean side if you wish to do so for Victoria Fall views.

The pool is only open to visitors during the dry season when the water is shallow enough for visitors to swim to the edge. There is a wall of submerged rocks protecting you from the hundred meters drop, but it still looks pretty scary!

How to Visit the Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls?

The only way to visit Devil’s Pool is to join the Livingstone Island Tour which can be added to any of our Victoria Falls tours. You can only access the Devil’s Pool through the Zambezi River and it is impossible to get there on your own. Visiting Devil’s pool is part of the Livingstone Island Tour. This tour also includes a short boat ride to Livingstone Island (a great experience in itself navigating through the rocky channels of the river), Brief tour of the island, welcome drink, a meal (either breakfast, lunch, or high tea), and the optional swim in Devil’s Pool. The tour makes the whole trip more comfortable and more enjoyable and reduces your stress of organizing such a visit.

However, you need to book your tour in advance as there are limited spaces and they tend to sell out quickly!

When is the Best Time to Experience Devil’s Pool?

Because as previously mentioned, Devil’s Pool visit is not available all year long. The Livingstone Island tour does not include Devil’s Pool during the wet season when water levels are too high and currents are too strong to swim- usually around February to June. Devil’s pool is only accessible during the dry season, when the level of the water is lower and the current not as strong, you should visit the Devil’s Pool between mid-August to mid-January. The best months are between October and November when the chances to get good weather and nice water conditions are higher than during any other time of the year. Although all times during the day will provide an incredible experience, going during one of the morning tours will provide the best opportunity to also a few rainbows while the high tea time slot will provide amazing sunset views.

During the opening period, there will be five guided tours per day. Keep in mind that to get to the actual pool, you’ll have to swim for a short distance across the Zambezi River, so you want to make sure you go when the currents are not strong.

Is Devil’s Pool Safe?

It is reasonable to have such a question in your mind when thinking about the idea of swimming on the edge of very powerful waterfalls. The simple answer to the question is that yes. However, As with anything in life, there are definitely risks involved. There have never been any deaths or casualties at the site, but still, you’ll need to be a bit careful, like always with these kinds of activities. You should be a confident swimmer, but the guides do a great job of looking after you. There is a safety line you can hold to on your way to the pool. The experience will for sure give you an adrenaline kick!

Here’s everything you need to go for a visit to the wonderful Devil’s Pool of the Victoria Falls. If you are an adventure lover or you have a passion for the extreme, you’ll enjoy this unforgettable experience!
